Introduction about ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF)
ASEAN Tourism Forum:ATF is the most important and the largest-scale activity in the ASEAN tourism cooperation framework. The 8-day forum draws the participation of around 1.500 delegates including tourism ministers, leaders of national tourism offices, travel agents, tour operators, press corps… in the region and worldwide. This is a big event of political, economic and social significances; a collective initiative aiming at turning ASEAN into an united tourist destination and at sustainable tourism development, thus contributing to visitor exchanges, friendly cooperation, cultural exchanges, peace and prosperity development in the region.
ATF was first held in 1981 in Malaysia. ASEAN countries have annually been taking turns to organise the event since then. Due to the event’s political, economic and social significances, host countries usually take opportunity to highlight their national tourism image. ATF have been organised mainly in old ASEAN member countries so far (5 times in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines; 4 times in Thailand, Indonesia; 1 times in Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, and Laos). ATF gives host countries the practical benefit of visitors increase, more active tourism activities as well as increasing interest of partners and investors.
Activities in ATF framework: Meetings of ASEAN Tourism Ministers; Meetings of ASEAN Tourism Ministers and Dialogue Countries; Meetings of leaders of National Tourism Offices; Meetings of task forces on ASEAN tourism integration; Travel Expo (Travex), ASEAN Tourism Conference; ASEANTA Board Meeting; press conferences and other related activities.
Vietnam participated in ATF: Since 1998, Vietnam Tourism has been participated in ATF, attended all meetings and activities in ATF framework. During these ATF, Vietnam Tourism had been organized tourism promotion such as: press conferences, entertainment shows, having banquet to advertise the land, the people, and the culture of Vietnam.
Vietnam will hold the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2009 (ATF) and the Travex Tourism Fair from January 5-12, 2009 in Ha Noi. This is the first time Vietnam has organised such a big event. It is a good chance for the host country to promote its tourism potential and expand tourism cooperation with foreign countries.
